Subject: [R7CO] IC 2008 Report
To: R7CO at yahoogroups.com, R7_List at yahoogroups.com
The 2008 Star fleet International Conference was held in Ithaca, NY from
June 27th to June 30th. As I held the position of Regional
Coordinator, I attended the EC/AB (Executive Committee/Admiralty Board)
meeting all day on Friday. A number of issues were discussed, including
the current expenditures for legal fees, our governing documents, and a
number of interesting benefits coming up.
Benefits of membership will include discounts at Choice Hotels (check
the web for which hotels are participating).
One big news item; Starfleet, the International Star Trek Fan
Association, has been granted exclusive use of the term Starfleet, in
perpetuity, by CBS licensing (the parent company of viacom and Paramount).
Saturday morning began with the General Session. All the EC and AB
marched in, then the Color Guard presented the Colors of the US, Canada,
New Zealand, and Iceland! After all four national anthems were played,
the Session began. We first had Chapter Roll Calls by Region (much
cheering when we got to Region 7!) then the EC presented their various
reports.
The Vice Commander, Garrick Halverson, spoke at length on why we have to
run things as a business, since we are incorporated in the State of
North Carolina. He outlined some efforts that are ongoing to pinpoint
where our Handbook and Constitution need updating, as well as our
Articles of Incorporation, which define us as a Corporation.
Sal next talked about all the uproar in Fleet, and explained his
reasoning behind a lot of the legal work being done. He said that
recently a number of legal questions were brought up concerning our
status as a corporation and how we did business, and that he was taking
steps to ensure we are in compliance with local, state, and national
laws. Sal said these issues had been around since Fleet incorporated,
but had been largely ignored over the years. He estimates we will be in
compliance before the end of the year.
The Annual Awards were next, and Cadet Jada Avery won Junior Member of
the Year!
Sal ended the Session by giving out promotions. Region 7 Folks promoted
were:
CAPT Wayne Augustson to Fleet Captain
COL Jonathan Slavin to Brigadier
FCAPT Mike Stein to Commodore
BGR Lauren Niemeyer to Brigadier General
BGEN Joe Dorffner to Major General
RADM Martin Lessem to Vice Admiral
VADM Beryl Washington to Admiral
After lunch, a number of interesting workshops were held. Workshops on
Recruiting, running an IC, a science panel on stars and star gazing,
plus the Marine Muster were held. I attended a session where JG
Hertzler and Robin Curtis were in attendance! They both live in upstate
New York; JG is on the faculty of Cornell University, teaching drama,
and Robin runs a Real Estate business! When they heard that Starfleet
was meeting in Ithaca, they offered to come over and chat with us, gratis!
It was a fun two hours! Hertzler (General Martok from DS9) spoke about
a number of funny things during his/stint on DS9, but he also waxed
poetical about New York State, and had some/serious opinions about the
Environment and how we need to be better stewards of the planet. Robin
Curtis (Savvik from Trek II and III), was quieter, and spoke of her love
of old houses and how she's not done much acting in a number of years.
JG kept using the phrase "I'm Hertzler, how come I don't know about
that?" whenever a new fact was being revealed. It got to be a running joke!
Saturday evening was the Banquet! It was a buffet, but very nice!
After Dinner, I handed out some Awards for Region 7 folks. I also got
to promote three individuals to Captain:
Dan Swift and Timothy Longo, of the USS Justice, and
Rosie Dorffner of the USS Edinburgh!
Just as I was finishing, FADM Sal Lizard stood up and asked for the
microphone. He then announced that I was out of uniform! I was dressed
in my authentic Next Gen Dress Uniform, and I was puzzled. Sal then
said he'd overlooked something that morning, and handed me the four pips
in a box of full Admiral!
Turns out, the three staff members I had promoted went to Sal and
submitted recommendations right away, so Sal acted on them and gave me
the promotion!
After that, we had an auction to benefit the Scholarship Fund! Folks
had donated various Trek memorabilia, and people bid on them. The
Icelanders scarfed up a whole bunch of the stuff, claiming it was hard
to come by up there. Guess the exchange rate was favorable!
After that, they had a DJ and some dancing. I went back to my room and
changed, then wandered around. I eventually wound up in the bar, where
a contingent of Starfleet Marines was gathered. As I have completed the
initial entry course, PD-10, and considered a Reserve Marine, I joined them.
Now, the Marines had been selling the SFMC Challenge coin all day, and I
had purchased one. It has the SFMC logo on one side, with the Starfleet
International inscription on the obverse. Good thing I had it in my pocket!
There is a little tradition, not just with the Starfleet Marines, called
the coin challenge. One person slaps down their coin, and all present
must produce theirs. If everyone does, the initial challenger buys the
next round. If there is someone present who doesn't have a coin, they pay.
Well, sure enough, someone slapped down their coin! I quickly got mine
out, and for a few seconds it sounded like a hailstorm on a tin roof!
Then, there was a few seconds of quiet, and someone spoke up, in a small
voice, and said "Oh <censored>! I left mine in my room!"
Yep, the Marines had caught one! Total tab: $70! And it wasn't me!!!
Sunday was nice and slow. A small interfaith service was held, then
everyone got a continental breakfast.
Finally, we had the closing ceremonies. Sal handed out a couple more
promotions, including
COMM Todd Brugmans to Rear Admiral!
Then he proceeded to perform an impromptu "Joining Ceremony"!
He waxed poetical about how ship Captains and others of that type had
been joining folks together for years, and he thought he should follow
in their stead. He called up Helen Pawlowski, who is 86 years old and
asked her to pick the person out of the crowd she wished to be joined
with! Now, Helen had been instrumental in bringing the Icelandic
chapter into SFI, and the group from Iceland had partied long and hard
into the night. Helen promptly pointed to one of the Icelanders, who was
sitting with his head in his hands, very ill from his late night
revels. When he didn't stand right away, two of his shipmates grabbed
him on either side and dragged him up to the podium. Sal had a lot of
flowery words about respecting each others' cultural traditions, and so
forth, then pronounced the two joined!
Then, he said they may now indicate their affiliation in whatever manner
their cultures dictated, so they did a fanny bump! It was hilarious!!
Finally, it was over!
I left Ithaca feeling very satisfied, and thinking already about
Greensboro, North Carolina and August of next year for 1C 2009!
